£3m Lord Street revamp cleared

Report by Donna MacAllister
26 April 2006
Southport’s Lord Street will be given a multi-million pound make-over following a successful funding bid by Sefton Council.
Sefton council hailed the move as part of a “masterplan” to improve the town. The revamp aims to recapture Lord Street’s original style and elegance.
Andy Wallis, Sefton Council’s Planning and Economic Regeneration Director, said: “Lord Street and the famous gardens are now in need of investment and restoration after 80 years of constant use. It will be a smarter, more attractive place to visit, live and work and will really endorse Southport’s image as a classic resort.”
The plans include stone paving to replace the cracked and worn out concrete flagstones, widening the pavements around the War Memorial, seating, new lighting, and public toilets.
The listed War Memorial pavilions will benefit from more than half-a-million pounds worth of repairs to damaged stonework.
At St George’s and North Gardens there will be new landscaping, decorative stone walls, new paths and the existing fountains will be restored.
Tree specialists have reviewed the boulevard’s trees and new species will be planted as some have now reached the end of their lives.
A garden will also be created at the northern section of Lord Street, near the Manchester Road roundabout.
“The area will be transformed into a new green oasis with new planting, paths and several new trees.
Mr Wallis added: “With the works on Lord Street, plus the pedestrianisation of Chapel Street and Nevill Street improvements, Southport will look better than ever.
“The Southport masterplan is well underway and the Lord Street restoration is yet another part of this.”
Cash for the plan, which was first revealed in The Champion, was approved by the European Union and Northwest Regional Development Agency.
