Southport is home to the UK's highest concentration of championship links courses and is widely regarded as ‘England's Golfing Capital’.

Royal Birkdale in Southport regularly hosts the The Open Championship with the last one being in July 2008. The club has also been the venue for the Womens Open in both 2005 and 2010.

But Southport's reputation for being England's Golfing Capital is not just based on Royal Birkdale it boasts another five championship courses within 15 minutes drive from the town centre and a sixth only half an hour away.

Hillside, Formby, Hesketh, Southport & Ainsdale, Formby Hall and West Lancashire Golf Clubs are all superb courses providing a challenge to the most accomplished golfer. And with plenty of accommodation in and around Southport, there's no excuse not to stay and try several of them in one visit.

Southport is also ideally situated for Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club - host of the 2012 British Open Championships. If you are planning to visit The Open why not consider Southport as your base and take in one or more of the courses while you are here!

Southport Old Links Golf Club, despite not being the biggest or best-known golf course in Southport, is still one of the oldest, with the quality to match its famous neighbours. Golf was first played here in 1892, before many  of the larger / more famous clubs had their first monthly medal or cut the fairways with their horse-drawn mowers for the first time.
